How many tiles are in an American Mahjong set?

That is not a rounding detail. It is the configuration the National Mah Jongg League card is built around, and a set that ships short is a set that cannot be played properly.

Why 166 and not 144

Chinese Mahjong and American Mahjong are different games with different equipment. A Chinese set runs to 144 tiles with small, thin faces. American Mahjong adds the flowers and the Jokers, and uses a tile that has to sit comfortably in a four-player rack for a whole evening.

Plenty of suppliers treat the difference as a detail and ship the same tile to both markets. It is the single most common way a wholesale order goes wrong.

What you should actually check on delivery

• Count the Jokers. There should be eight. It is the first thing that goes missing.
• Check for spare blanks. Good sets include blank tiles you can have engraved if one is lost, so a single dropped tile does not retire the whole set.
• Look at the engraving depth. Colour-filled engraving holds up; surface printing wears off within a year of regular play.
• Test one rack. If a tile wobbles in it, the rack was not matched to the tile thickness, and that is a manufacturing decision, not bad luck.

Does the NMJL card change the tile count?

No. The card changes every year — the hands are different, the strategies shift — but the tile configuration does not. A set bought today stays compatible with this year’s card and every card after it.

That is worth knowing if you are buying stock to hold. You are not buying something that expires in twelve months.

Sizing, briefly

Standard American tiles run around 30 × 23 × 13 mm. Larger sets go to 32 or 33 mm, and the difference is noticeable across a wide table — particularly for players who would rather not lean in to read their own hand.

If you are stocking for a senior community, the larger profile is usually the right call.
